Description

Kids and parents listen to an educator talk about an artifactHomeschoolers are invited to join VMHC Education for a day of free educational activities themed around our newest temporary exhibition, Give Me Liberty: Virginia & the Forging of a Nation. Give Me Liberty highlights Virginia's role in the American Revolution as the signature exhibition of Virginia's 250th Commission.

FULL SCHEDULE

Morning Only

All About Tea! (all ages)  - presented by our friends at Wilton House

  • Learn about the influence of tea during the American Revolution through smelling and tasting Wilton House’s custom Liberty blend, interacting with replica tea-related artifacts, and completing activity sheets.

All Day

Exhibits (all ages) – Upstairs
•    Explore our temporary anniversary, “Give Me Liberty: Virginia & the Forging of a Nation” to learn more about the role that Virginians played in the American Revolution.
•    Please Note – All other exhibits are also open to visitors. 

Crafts & Stories (Prek-Elem) – Ground Floor, Halsey Hall
•    Read stories and complete crafts that connect to our exhibitions! Try your hand at making a tricorn hat & rosette cockade, your very own ball & cup game, and even design your own stamp after learning more about the Stamp Act in the exhibit upstairs.
•    Please Note - Crafts are first come, first served and may run out towards the end of the day. 

Hands-On Stations (all ages) – Upstairs, Landscapes Gallery 
•    Stop by and touch our replica artifacts to learn about what items Continental Army soldiers carried with them, what clothes they wore, and even see some examples of letters they would have written. 
•   Smell popular examples of herbs & spices that would have been used by soldiers for medicinal remedies.

•    Please Note: these stations will end at 4:00. 

Games from the Past (all ages) – Outside, Dominion Energy Plaza

•    Compete in stick horse races, try to “Get George Washington Home to Mount Vernon” in a 19th century version of chutes & ladders, and roll hoops down the lawn.

•   Please Note: these stations will end at 4:00. 

Scavenger Hunts (all ages) – Check In Desks 
•    Prefer a self-guided approach? Grab one of our scavenger hunts and work your way through the galleries on your own schedule. Completed scavenger hunts get a 10% discount in our café or shop!

Introductory Film (Content geared towards upper elementary & above, though all ages will enjoy the visuals!) – Upstairs, Theatre
•    Our 15-minute Virginia History overview film is a great way to begin or end your experience at the museum! It plays every twenty minutes (on the hour, twenty past, forty past, on the hour)

Food – Ground Floor
•    Our café will be open from 10:00-5:00. 

Quiet Space – Ground Floor, Bluford Classrooms 
•    Need a break? Head to our designated quiet space in the Bluford
