On April 6, 1865, nearly a quarter of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s army—more than 7,700 men—were killed, wounded, or captured at the Battle of Sailor’s Creek. Seventy-two hours later, on April 9, the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia in the McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House signaled the end of major combat actions in Virginia and led to the end of the American Civil War.
Please join us on this specially led, 160-year commemorative tour of Lee’s Retreat with guest instructors, retired Brig. Gen. John W. Mountcastle and James Herrera-Brookes, Ph.D., VMHC Melanie Trent De Schutter Library Director.
