Brewing in the Black Community: From African Origins to Craft’s Future

Join the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, Richmond Beeristoric, and the Virginia Museum of History & Culture for a Virginia Craft Beer Month program that examines the past, present, and future of brewing in the Black community.

A panel of experts will explore the brewing traditions of West Africa, the stories of enslaved brewers, and current efforts of Black entrepreneurs to establish craft breweries in the Commonwealth. Speakers will include “Dr. J” Nikol Jackson-Beckham, equity and inclusion partner with the nationwide Brewers Association; Dr. Theresa McCulla, curator of the Smithsonian Institution’s American Brewing History Initiative; Debra Freeman, creator and host of the acclaimed African-American foodways podcast “Setting the Table;” Eric Jackson, founder and president of the CapSoul Brewing Collective; and Lee Graves, author of three books on brewing in Virginia. 

Following the panel conversation, attendees will enjoy light refreshments and be able to sample several beers, including a collaboration by Richmond’s Ardent Craft Ales with the Capsoul Brewing Collective, the Freedom Ale, brewed by 1865 Brewing Co. (the first Black-owned brewery in Hampton Roads, Virginia), and a special millet-based beer brewed by Ardent Craft Ales and based on West African traditions.
