Description

Two people making paper lanternsJoin VMHC for a day of free homeschool admission, crafts, and games themed around our newest temporary exhibition, We the People: The World in Our Commonwealth. This exhibition presents the stories of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity, and refuge by immigrating to the United States. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, immersive environments with personal objects, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

Participants will have the opportunity to tour this exhibition, along with VMHC's other galleries, participate in a scavenger hunt highlighting immigration stories throughout Virginia's history, and learn about crafts & games that highlight cultures on display in the exhibition. This is a drop in program and participants are welcome to arrive anytime they like. Please register to allow our team to prep the appropriate amount of materials!

Games & Crafts Include:

  •   Paper Weaving (Mali)
  •   Colorful Lanterns, or Fanous (Egypt)
  •   Vase Decorating (Greece)
  •   Daruma Otoshi - a classic stacking game (Japan)
  •   Yut Nori - a fast paced bord game (South Korea)

We will also have representatives from the Italian American Cultural Association and Organization of Chinese Americans - Central Virginia Chapter onsite to talk about their history, as well as a Mexican Street Corn Cooking Demo from Young Chef's Academy!
