On July 17 at 5:30 p.m., Patrick K. O’Donnell will deliver the 2024 Hazel and Fulton Chauncey Lecture entitled “The Unvanquished: The Untold Story of Lincoln’s Special Forces and the Manhunt for Mosby’s Rangers.”
The Civil War is most remembered for the grand battles that have come to define it. However, as bestselling author Patrick K. O’Donnell reveals, a vital shadow war raged amid and away from the major battlefields. At the heart of this groundbreaking narrative is the epic story of Lincoln’s special forces, the Jessie Scouts, told in its entirety for the first time. Patrick K. O’Donnell is a bestselling, award-winning military historian, and an expert on elite units. He is the author of several books, including Washington’s Immortals: The Untold Story of an Elite Regiment Who Changed the Course of the Revolution; The Indispensables: The Diverse Soldier-Mariners Who Shaped the Country, Formed the Navy, and Rowed Washington Across the Delaware; and The Unvanquished: The Untold Story of Lincoln’s Special Forces, the Manhunt for Mosby’s Rangers, and the Shadow War That Forged America’s Special Operations. He served as a combat historian in a marine rifle platoon during the battle of Fallujah and has provided historical consulting for the miniseries Band of Brothers and for documentaries produced by the BBC, the History Channel, Fox News, and Discovery.
